Positioning in the room
Very low frequencies such as those
transmitted by the Active subwoofers
are very difficult to localise. With
increasing switchover frequency, e.g.
when used with small shelf speakers, it
is also possible to localise a
subwoofer. This creates a non-
homogeneous sound character.
The aim therefore is to incorporate the
Active subwoofer such that it is not
perceived as being in the foreground
but rather as being an extension of the
sound picture in the direction of lower
frequencies.
In order to achieve this, Revox
recommends taking note of the
following points.
• Experience shows that a more
homogeneous sound picture is
achieved if the subwoofer is located in
the area of the main speakers or
between them.
• Locating it in the corner of the room
can lead to unwelcome resonance
(drone effects) with individual low bass
frequencies.
• With large rooms or in rooms that
present acoustic challenges, deploying
a second subwoofer can contribute to
achieving a more equal distribution of
the bass range and as a result,
significantly improve the quality of the
reproduction.
Because of the Active 03’s/ 04's high
input impedance, there is no problem
with splitting the LFE or Line signal.
Having found a good position to locate
the speaker, the bass properties can
be fine-tuned using the volume , the
switchover frequency , the phase
length and by adjusting the distance
of the speaker from the walls. The bass
reproduction of the Active subwoofer
becomes more powerful but also more
imprecise, the nearer it is positioned to
the wall or the corner of the room. By
establishing a larger space between
the speaker and the wall, the bass
reproduction moves more towards a
"leaner and dryer" bass sound.
