These instructions for use for aerosol-tight centrifugation are a supplement to the operating manual for the
centrifuge and are not a substitute. Read the operating manual before centrifuging aerosol-tight for the first
time. The current version of the operating manual can be found on the Internet at www.eppendorf.com.
You have acquired a rotor and a rotor lid from Eppendorf to enable you to centrifuge materials or solutions
hazardous to health in an aerosol-tight manner. We have applied the highest possible quality standards in order
to supply you with reliable products. For your safety, Eppendorf has had the rotor and the rotor lid tested and a
certificate issued by the Centre of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Health Protection Agency, Porton
Down (UK) as per IEC 1010-2-020.
However, the length of time that your rotor, rotor lid and seal remain aerosol-tight depends upon your correct
and careful usage of the products.
In addition to the following measures, follow the national regulations and guidelines applicable to you. Only all
of these measures together can provide you with optimal protection:
Consider aerosol-tight centrifugation with Eppendorf products just one of several measures you should take
when handling hazardous materials or solutions.
Only work with dangerous substances following thorough familiarization in a laboratory appropriate for this.
If necessary, protect yourself with protective clothing such as a mask, safety glasses and gloves.
Use safe tubes and close these carefully.
Only work with dangerous materials when you are healthy and when your decision-making ability is not
impaired by medication or other substances.
For optimum handling of Eppendorf aerosol-tight centrifugation products, take the following measures:
Use the correct rotor/rotor lid combination.
When using an aerosol-tight rotor lid, ensure that it is used exclusively in the intended centrifuge and with
the intended rotor. Use only rotors and rotor lids designated as
FA . Aerosol tightness can only in this way be
guaranteed.
Information as to in which centrifuge the rotor lid may be used will be found on the upper side of the rotor lid
as of October 2003 production dates. Under no circumstances should you use the rotor lid in a centrifuge
other than that stated on the rotor lid. The aerosol-tightness can otherwise no longer be guaranteed!
Check seals.
The aerosol-tight rotor lid comes equipped with two seal rings: one on the lid screw and one on the lid
groove. The aerosol-tight rotor lid may only be used with undamaged, clean seals. Frayed, worn or dirty
seals do not provide adequate protection and may lead to loss of aerosol-tightness.
Incorrect autoclaving can also cause damage. We recommend coating the threads of the rotor lid with
a thin layer of pivot grease after each autoclaving process (Order no. International 5810 350.050,
order no. for North America 022634330). The rotor lid should be replaced by a new, aerosol-tight rotor lid
every 10 autoclaving cycles (121 °C, 20 min).
The rotor lids of the rotors FA-45-24-11 and FA-45-24-11-Special for Centrifuge 5424 / 5424 R should be
replaced by a new, aerosol-tight rotor lid every 50 autoclaving cycles.
Check regularly that seals are undamaged! Rotor lids with defective seals may no longer be used and must
be replaced with a new rotor lid.
Following 50 autoclaving cycles or in the event of a defective external seal on rotor FA-45-18-11 for
Centrifuge 5418 / 5418 R or on rotor FA-45-6-30 for Centrifuge 5804 / 5804 R / 5810 / 5810 R, only the
external red sealing ring, not the entire rotor lid, needs replacing.
Rule out contamination and damage.
Impurities caused by chemicals or other aggressive solutions attack the material of the rotor, the rotor lid and
the seals. This can result in a loss of aerosol-tightness. Clean the rotor and rotor lid with neutral detergent
immediately. This applies particularly to the bores of the rotor.
Mechanical factors can cause damage to the rotor and the rotor lid (e.g. falls, scratches, blows ...).
Carry out a visual inspection of the rotor and rotor lid prior to usage.
Damaged rotors or rotor lids may no longer be used.
Please note that, in order to preserve the seal, the aerosol-tight rotor may not be stored with the lid attached
tightly.
